gstm-logoSSH is a robust and powerful tool for tunneling network connections in a secure manner.

This article introduces gSTM, a GUI tool for setting up SSH tunnels.

1. Overview

The GNOME Secure shell Tunnel Manager is a front-end to manage secure shell tunneled port redirects. A port redirect is when you use secure shell to tunnel from your machine through another machine.

2. Howto...

2.1. Install

To install gSTM you may utilize the package manger of your Linux distribution. The following example illustrates how to install gSTM at command line.

To install via command line, type in the following command (valid on Debian-based Distributions like Ubuntu).

# install gSTM via command line
$ sudo apt-get install gstm

2.2. Start and Configure gSTM

To start gSTM you just have to start the applicaiton from the main menu of your desktop.

Adding a configuration is quite simple:

  • Fist you have to add a tunnel configuration.

add-tunnel

  • Set the name of the tunnel, the target host and user name to utilize.
  • The last step required is to add at least one port redirection. (local, remote, dynamic)

add-redirection

Now, you are ready to start your tunnel. When the target host has been found and the target port is accessible, you will be prompted to key-in the password of the remote account.

To utilize the freshly created tunnel connection, you will have to configure your local applicatons to connect to the starting point of the tunnel. That's it.
